We all know that sunscreen is an essential part of your everyday skincare routine, but most of us never think to protect our hair. We invest in luxury shampoos, deep conditioning treatments and styling products to protect our hair’s condition and color, but did you know that the UV rays of the sun can fade that beautiful color you’ve been working so hard to protect?

SPF for Your Hair

After spending a big chunk of my hard earned money for my colorist to achieve the perfect shade of blonde, I’ll be damned it I’m going to let the sun strip it away. Applying a product with sun protection before spending a day at the beach or by the pool creates a barrier between your hair and the harmful rays of the sun. Even if you’re not blonde, using one of these products will save your color and prevent dehydration and brittleness.

One of my favorite multi-use products that I use daily, rain or shine, is the Bumble and Bumble Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil. Not only does it leave my hair beautifully soft and shiny, but it protects against heat and UV damage. When applied to dry hair, your fingers glide through your strands like silk (and it smells amazing!) Another new favorite comes from the creative minds at Sachajuan. Their genius system consists of two products, Hair In The Sun, which protects your hair from the heat and UV rays of the sun, and Hair After The Sun, a deliciously scented product that adds moisture and hydration back to the hair. Yes, it’s another step in your routing but it’s so important to create a barrier between your hair and the sun. And make sure you’re also taking good care of your hair when you’re not outside. Use a good hair mask once or twice a week and lay off of the hot tools as much as you can during the summer months. It’s too beautiful outside to spend all that time slaving over your flat iron waves anyhow. Let it air dry and enjoy your summer!
